Pamela (Pam) Dyantyi is a versatile actress, director, writer, and musician, showcasing a remarkable array of talents. In a special interview with Affirmations Media, Pam shared her insights on the significance of dedicating time, passion, and commitment to her craft.

Although she faces internal challenges and moments of self-doubt, she conveys that an unexplainable love for art drives her to persevere, even when the path becomes arduous.

When enquired about the moment she recognised her talent, Pamela responded with the following:

“The reality of art is this: It is often only later in life that one becomes aware of one’s inherent talent (this was certainly true in my case),” Pam said.

“Reflecting on my childhood, I recognise that I was an exuberant child, brimming with energy and expressiveness. I frequently dressed as if I were a performer on stage. I would enact various performances, mimicking characters I had observed in theatrical productions or on television. Yet, it never crossed my mind that I possessed any talent, at least not until I reached a particular point in my life,” she said.

Pam indicated that before 2018, during her first year at Rhodes University, she met a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds. This experience enabled her to recognise her inherent talent for acting. Up until that moment, she had not completely acknowledged her capacity to work or write in the way she does now.

In addition to performance, Pam utilises art as a tool for intellectual engagement, innovation, and creativity to address social issues by questioning the established norms of societal institutions. Operating within a predominantly patriarchal context, Pam articulates her wish not to be part of existing dialogues but to create a unique path that truly represents her identity. This is the opportunity that art has afforded her.

As someone who prefers to manage her own production, she underscores the significance of presenting the narrative from her distinct viewpoint as she imagines it. Pam maintains that her creativity originates from her imagination and vision, which she holds in high regard. This element is vital to her production endeavours, as she cannot permit anyone else to direct her script.

“This is not an issue of arrogance; it is a reflection of my vision, which I regard with utmost seriousness,” Pamela stated. While she welcomes assistance, recognising that everyone sometimes requires support, her writing is fundamental to her identity and expression. This is why she chooses to be actively involved from the very beginning of the production process.

Pamela describes her art as her refuge. “My art serves as my saving grace. It is the source of my inspiration and the place where I continually seek healing, peace, love, and personal growth,” Pam told Affirmations Media.

In 2018, Pamela had the opportunity to audition at the New York Film Academy, with a chance of obtaining a scholarship. Regrettably, she could not participate due to financial limitations. However, remaining true to her resilient character, she does not let obstacles deter her and continues to push forward. That same year, she was also awarded a certificate of recognition from Tyler Perry Studios.

In 2021, she undertook various roles as the writer, director, producer, and actress for the short film Malkom no Meri, which premiered at the National Arts Festival.

Pamela highlights Malkom no Marie as a project of significance, sharing her exhilarating journey from its beginning to final production despite her many other upcoming projects.

“I aimed to delve into the complexities of women provoked by societal norms. Originally a stage play, Malkom no Meri: The Night of Revelations is a short film focused on themes of madness, evolving human dynamics, and the challenges of bruised masculinity and traditional gender roles,” she stated.

Pamela emphasises that her academic background in politics has greatly shaped her professional pursuits and ability to express her character(s) creatively.

She feels unbound by traditional scriptwriting rules, focusing on effective communication over technicality. As she reflected on her personal growth, Pam urged young Black women in the industry to pursue their dreams without fear, emphasising, “You have only one life!”
