Lethabo Makweya is a young South African professional with a robust background and a deep passion for the arts. Her distinctive character consistently sets her apart from others.
In an exclusive interview with Affirmations Media, Makweya expressed that art has been her primary love since her childhood, dating back to her primary school years, where she began to flourish into the woman she is today and aims to become in the field of arts.
Her strong personality was showcased through drama and dance, which have consistently been her chosen electives during her high school years.
“I was always an overachiever and reverential. People detested me for that,” she said. Besides being ‘Head Girl’ at school, she gathered multiple awards for her drama elective and other subjects.
Makweya is in the process of completing her Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama and Organisational Psychology at Rhodes University while engaging in performance art productions as a hobby.
The Lioness is a writer, performer, and director who has been recognised at the National Arts Festival (NAF) on four occasions. Recently, she crafted one of her notable works, a project she also co-directed, titled Fragments, which was showcased at this year’s NAF.
The production achieved success at the NAF. Fragments presented a glimpse into life intertwined with technology and social media, examining how one’s identity is shaped by these platforms. It raises questions about the significance of value associated with likes and follower counts. The production was honoured with the Standing Ovation Award.
Among Makweya’s creations is the film Dying to be Human, which she directed and premiered at the National Arts Festival. Following the film’s screening, Affirmations Media had the opportunity to interview the Lioness regarding the film. She expressed that the film addresses various perspectives on the challenges of being human and highlights the irony of our existence, where we are born human yet struggle to truly live.
“There is nothing humane about humanity anymore, and that’s one of the things that was in the back of my mind when making this film,” she said.
Makweya can be characterised as a ‘jack of all trades, yet a master of none, but often better than a master of one.’ She is involved in various roles, including dancer, director, performer, and writer. She expressed that her family means everything to her, having consistently supported her creative endeavours and encouraged her to chase her aspirations.
In the future, she intends to join her family business, Promethean Media, as a director upon the completion of her studies.
At Affirmations Media, we are confident that she will achieve success due to her dedication and talent, independent of the advantages her family may provide.
