In light of the investigation conducted by Carte Blanche, which uncovered the purported exploitation of Thanda Choir by its management, Thanda Choir has subsequently released a press statement declaring that the founding choir is reclaiming complete control and is asserting its full rights.
“The founding members of Thanda Choir, one of Khayelitsha’s most celebrated vocal ensembles, announce a bold step toward independence. After years of being exploited and recently cast out of the very ensemble that they founded by outside managers, the founding members are now fully reclaiming their future,” the press statement reads.
Key Demands:
- Immediate ownership of all their choir composition and creative works.
- Full, direct payment of all past and future royalties to their choir members.
- Complete ownership of the Thanda Choir brand.
- Full control over all digital content, including media and social channels.
A Break from Past Exploitation
Thanda Choir confirmed that it is no longer affiliated with the following:
- Up Next Studies
- Julio Teixeira
- Luke Bernhardi
- Asavela Mpayipheli
- Zikhona Maphisa
NB: Please be advised that all previous bookings and agreements with the aforementioned individuals and agencies are rendered null and void. “We are the founding members and unite to safeguard the legacy we initiated and developed to its current state.”
During this challenging time, the founding members of the Thanda Choir have persistently sought support, reaching out to legal professionals for guidance as they navigate this struggle. They are appealing for assistance from lawyers who can aid them in securing their rights and ensuring equitable treatment. Additionally, they have contacted media organisations for interviews to amplify their narrative and to guarantee that their voices are heard widely.
