Today marks a significant occasion, Africa Day, which is commemorated throughout the continent under the theme of Education Fit for the 21st Century.
Education plays a crucial role in our society, serving as a fundamental element. The education system in Africa faces numerous challenges influenced by various factors, including political, economic, social, and cultural aspects. Additionally, the long-lasting impact of colonialism has left a significant gap in the education system. However, delving into this topic requires a separate discussion.
It is widely recognized that education serves as the cornerstone for individual success and a prosperous Africa. As we commemorate and contribute to the African Union’s efforts in shaping the future of education on the continent, it is essential to contemplate how education can be reformed to meet the demands of the 21st century.
In honor of African Day, we, at Affirmations Media, decided to gather perspectives on the significance of education in fostering socio-economic progress and providing equal opportunities for all Africans. During our interactions with the youth in the bustling streets of Johannesburg, South Africa, we came across some intriguing insights:
“During my time in school, I studied social studies; however, I regret to say that our history curriculum at the primary level was lacking. It was only later on that I discovered the wealth of poignant and captivating stories about our continent, not limited to South Africa”.
“In all honesty, our true journey of learning commences only after completing high school in South Africa. Regrettably, we are deprived of a significant amount of information and knowledge about ourselves and our rich histories”.
“Given the significant impact of unemployment on the youth in South Africa, many of us young individuals question the value of pursuing education. We ponder whether our choice of studies was misguided. It is unclear whether the issue lies in our mindset or with the government, but it is evident that a change is necessary”.
These are the viewpoints shared by the individuals we interacted with on the streets regarding the state of education in South Africa and the entire continent.
