South Africa is a captivating nation that possesses a rich cultural and historical background. Despite its dark moments, it stands as a land with a remarkable history in various aspects, including music. One cannot discuss South African Jazz and its significance without acknowledging the legendary Sipho ‘Hostix’ Mabuse.
Growing up in the 1980s, 1990s, or early 2000s, individuals like myself were familiar with the experience of having a father or uncle eagerly awaiting Sipho Mabuse’s latest music and playing it loudly throughout the house.
Unbeknownst to me, I was part of a generation influenced by my uncle’s love for Sipho ‘Hostix’ Mabuse’s music, which led me to appreciate other jazz music legends such as Mabuse, Steve Kekana, the late Bra Hugh Masekela, Louis Moholo, Mam’ Miriam Makeba, Nduduzo Makhathini, and many others.
Sipho ‘Hostix’ Mabuse, born and raised in Soweto, has an illustrious career that began in the 1970s. Sipho’s musical talent has gained recognition, as his music was featured in MTN’s summer campaign in December 2021. Additionally, he graced the cover of GQ Magazine’s Jan/Feb issue in 2021/22, which included a 16-page feature. His contributions to the music industry have been acknowledged with a GQ Lifetime Achievement Award in December 2021.
Thirty-seven years ago, Sipho’s hit single “Burn Out” became a phenomenon, revolutionizing Afro-pop and township jive. This song, unlike any other in pop music history, left an indelible mark.
Today, Sipho’s musical prowess knows no bounds. He has mastered various instruments, including the flute, piano, saxophone, kalimba, alto flute, timbales, and African drums. Each instrument is played with utmost respect, showcasing his versatility.
