Andre Young, widely recognised as Dr Dre, is an American rapper, record producer, and record executive who has recently become a member of one of the most prestigious groups globally, the Billionaires’ Club.
In March, the 61-year-old music mogul made his debut on Forbes’ billionaires list, becoming only the second rapper to achieve this milestone, following Jay-Z. His increasing wealth is attributed to the rising value of his music catalogue, real estate holdings, and investments, as well as the successful sale of Beats by Dre in 2014, which included a significant stake in Apple.
In a recent statement to Forbes, Dr Dre expressed that he does not pursue money. Rather, he aims to have money pursue him.
“I’ve always been able to bet on myself, and whatever I do and wherever I go, I know I have my talent with me,” he told Forbes.
Hip-hop enthusiasts recognise Dr Dre for his remarkable career, having established the paths for numerous global hip-hop stars, including Eminem and Snoop Dogg, among others. To some, he has played both a direct and indirect role in shaping their careers.
His career dates back to 1984 with World Class Wreckin’ Cru and rose to prominence as a founding member of the rap group N.W.A., significantly contributing to the definition of the West Coast hip-hop sound as a prominent artist and producer.
Following his departure from N.W.A. in the early 1990s, he co-founded Death Row Records alongside Suge Knight in 1992 and promptly released his debut solo album, The Chronic, which remains iconic to this day, featuring classic hits such as “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang”. He subsequently produced Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle.
In March 1996, Dr Dre exited Death Row Records due to the label’s increasingly violent and chaotic environment, coupled with his aspiration for creative independence.
In 1996, he established his own label, Aftermath Entertainment, a record label under Jimmy Iovine’s Interscope Records, which became the home for global hip-hop icons like Eminem, 50 Cent, and Kendrick Lamar.
Another significant milestone in Dr Dre’s career was the collaboration with Iovine to create Beats by Dre, a headphone brand, which they, along with other investors, sold to Apple in 2024 for over 3 billion dollars in cash and stock.
