Adapted from the acclaimed novel by poet, novelist, and essayist Njabulo S. Ndebele, this poignant theatrical work is produced by The Market Theatre in partnership with The Baxter Theatre Centre.

This insightful new play, which embodies themes of resilience, is adapted by Alex Burger and directed by the esteemed MoMo Matsunyane, the current Standard Bank Young Artist Winner for Theatre.

The narrative unfolds through the perspective of a literary professor, focusing on the experiences of four women reflecting on a time of waiting during their partners’ absence. The production skillfully balances intense emotional moments with cleverly interspersed humor, intertwining their personal stories to reveal the shadows, isolation, and complexities of their experiences. A series of intimate and impactful dialogues emerge as the characters articulate the significant effects of this period in their lives, exploring their deep-seated longing and uncertainty while connecting their narratives to the life and legacy of Winnie Mandela.

The theme of waiting serves as a central motif, inviting the audience to contemplate the historical challenges faced by women and drawing connections to their own modern experiences.

You are cordially invited to witness these resilient women as they convene, share their narratives, sing, and metaphorically partake in their “tea” – a powerful mixture of strength and vulnerability.

This is an opportunity not to be missed, as it delves into the profound themes of love, resilience, courage, and the unyielding spirit of women.
