Born in 1939 and passed away in 2018, Bra Hugh is a legendary South African trumpeter, flugelhorn player, and composer, often referred to as the “Father of South African Jazz”. He is a towering figure in the international music landscape, renowned for his captivating Afro-jazz rhythms as well as his lifelong dedication to combating the oppressive apartheid system.

“In collaboration with the Foundation, this powerful tribute brings together an extraordinary lineup of artists whose voices reflect the richness, resilience, and evolution of African music,” the statement reads.

In a bold move, an extraordinary lineup has been unveiled, inspired by the spirit of Bra Hugh, with each artist believed to embody a fragment of Masekela’s essence. Featured artists include Vusi Mahlasela, Judith Sephuma, Zoe Modiga, Tresor, the Baobab sisters, and iComplete. The show is under the direction of James Ngcobo, whose artistic vision transforms the stage into a vibrant homage. With the careful musical guidance of Sydney Mavundla, the trumpet takes centre stage, ensuring that every note resonates with the precision and fervour reminiscent of the maestro himself.
