The Sowetan giants Orlando Pirates achieved a historic milestone on Saturday, 24 October, during the South Africa Fashion Week (SAFW) at The Forum, Hyde Park Corner in Johannesburg, establishing themselves as the first-ever Premier Soccer League (PSL) club to serve as the headline act for a dedicated SA Fashion Week production entitled “Field to Fashion”.
Throughout the presentation, Pirates and Adidas introduced a limited-edition third jersey for the Betway Premiership 2026/27 season, drawing inspiration from the landscape, character, and generations that have fundamentally shaped the club’s distinctive identity.
The “Field to Fashion” initiative strategically paired Orlando Pirates athletes with distinguished South African designers, including Neo Serati, David Tlale, and Yona, transitioning from soccer footwear to individually curated designer ensembles that seamlessly integrate football culture with contemporary high fashion.
The showcase further served to unite sport and lifestyle sectors, demonstrating how pre-match tunnel processions, player arrivals, and sartorial choices have evolved into significant cultural moments that extend beyond the conventional 90-minute football match.

This event, which transported the club’s football heritage into the fashion domain, witnessed former captains and legendary Pirates figures such as Happy Jele and Innocent Maela appearing on the runway alongside active roster members.
The fashion show took place one day following Orlando Pirates’ qualification to the 2026/27 CAF Champions League group stages, through a decisive 4-0 victory over Namibian champions African Stars at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Friday. This commanding home performance resulted in an impressive 5–0 aggregate victory.
This achievement underscores the considerable influence and the marketing and branding accomplishments of the Orlando Pirates. Earlier in the year, Brand Finance designated and ranked Orlando Pirates as the second-most valuable sports brand in South Africa (and the foremost football club brand), positioned immediately after the Springboks, the national rugby team.
Pursuant to the South Africa Sports Report, the Springboks emerged as the most formidable South African sports team across all sporting disciplines, attaining a Brand Strength Index (BSI) score of 91.9 out of 100, whereas the Sea Robbers achieved 83.2 and the Kaizer Chiefs 82.6, with the Proteas from South African cricket obtaining 79.9.
Pirates have emerged as a cherished institution within South African football, demonstrating remarkable support both at their home venue, Orlando Amstel Arena, and across the nation as their supporters travel extensively to follow the team. The organisation has acknowledged this dedication by delivering championship success, securing victories in the Betway Premiership, the MTN 8, and the Carling Knockout Cup.
In recognition of their most devoted supporters, the club introduced a home jersey featuring a sophisticated black foundation complemented by a granite-inspired geometric design and grey embellishments. The granite motif represents fortitude, resilience, and the steadfast foundation upon which the club is built. The design incorporates red accents along the sleeves and prominently displays the iconic skull emblem at the front.
However, the away jersey garnered exceptional enthusiasm from supporters, achieving such widespread appeal that even rival Kaizer Chiefs supporters acquired the kit without hesitation. The Pirates away jersey has achieved status as an iconic design among enthusiasts, presenting a refined white and cream palette with gold detailing that embodies contemporary football street culture. The jersey distinguishes itself by incorporating the classic Adidas trefoil logo rather than the conventional performance insignia, establishing a refined, lifestyle-focused aesthetic intended to honour the character and cultural richness of the city.
On Saturday, the club elevated its third jersey collection with the introduction of a third kit, accompanied by a fashion presentation to showcase the design. This initiative further underscores the organisation’s prominence and influence within the branding landscape.
