On Tuesday, 14 April, Banyana Banyana secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Algeria in an international friendly match held at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu.
Nthabiseng Majiya was the decisive player in this encounter, scoring the only goal of the match in the first half, just 10 minutes before the halftime break. With a splendid strike from the edge of the penalty area, Majiya provided South Africa with the lead.
Despite numerous chances to extend their advantage, Banyana Banyana failed to score again, and neither did the North African side. The match concluded with a slim 1-0 victory for the home team. This game marked the first of two international friendly matches between the two countries, both of which are preparing for the upcoming 2026 Confederation of African Football (Caf) Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) scheduled for July, shortly after the FIFA Men’s World Cup.
It was also a time of celebration for Banyana Banyana’s Bambanani ‘Juice’ Mbane, who achieved her 100th appearance for the national team. Mbane made her debut as a substitute in 2016 during the second leg of the Caf Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Botswana at the Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa. South Africa secured a victory in that match with a score of 3-0.
The upcoming match between Banyana Banyana and Algeria is scheduled for Friday, 17 April, at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi.
