Typically, the contributions of musicians are recognized post-retirement or following their passing. However, Silindokuhle Sandiso Silatsha, a 22-year-old student at Rhodes University, is actively reshaping this perception through his musical endeavors. Known by the stage name SAND ISO, Silindokuhle draws inspiration from his heritage and upbringing, which are profoundly shaped by the social and cultural environment of the Eastern Cape province.
He composes his lyrics, which he considers a fundamental aspect that distinguishes his music. This approach allows him to convey his true self. His objective is to inspire, ignite creativity, and provide a sense of purpose to his audience through his lyrical content and melodies.
A notable track for SAND ISO is “Sing for You,” which he dedicated to his sister, who is alive and thriving. He explains that this song reflects a moment when he felt defeated and was ready to give up. His sister has consistently encouraged him to rise and pursue his aspirations. He emphasizes the significance of gratitude, a lesson we should all heed, recognizing and appreciating our loved ones while they are still with us. SAND ISO wholeheartedly embraces this principle.
Like many emerging artists, SAND ISO heavily depends on his home studio. This environment is ideal for an artist seeking personal growth, as it provides ample time to hone their skills without financial constraints, despite the sacrifices involved in pursuing their dreams.
As an independent musician, he finances much of his music production himself, making essential sacrifices in both time and resources. Additionally, he must engage in self-promotion, connect with his audience, and utilize various media platforms to distribute his music.
In aspiring to reach his peers, SAND ISO remarks, “I cannot claim to have a specific audience, although it would mean a great deal if my peers found value in my music. I firmly believe that, for the most part, the messages conveyed in my songs are intended for them, and inspired by my contemporaries.
Much of what I write stems from my personal experiences and the unfortunate realities I encounter. While these subjects captivate me, they are indeed my reality, and I often wish they were merely a fantasy.”
SAND ISO identifies key elements essential for success as an independent artist, emphasizing the importance of continuous practice, networking with fellow artists, and making a positive impression.
