Just a few weeks ago, Affirmations Media commemorated Women’s Month, and it is fitting to reflect on the inspiring journey of Qonda Majavu, who attributes much of his success to his greatest supporter: his mother. Monica Majavu, his mother, is someone Qonda holds in the highest regard, acknowledging the numerous challenges they have faced together.
With a radiant smile, Qonda expresses that his mother is indelibly etched in his heart, a sentiment that he believes is unparalleled. He incorporates her name into his songs as a tribute to her unwavering support, describing her as a source of strength, heart, and soul.
Hailing from Mthatha, Qonda Majavu, who performs under the stage name Phoenix_047, is a raw talent striving to refine his artistry and convey his unique identity through music. He asserts that hip-hop has provided him with an avenue to articulate his experiences and share his background with the world, free from the fear of judgment or condemnation.
Having lost his father at the tender age of ten, Phoenix_047 has relied on his mother as both a caregiver and a confidante. He reflects on the mixed experiences of growing up in township areas, where he often observed other children with their fathers, wishing for his own to be present. Nevertheless, the love, comfort, and support from his mother during those trying times have been a source of stability and warmth throughout his life.
One of his songs dedicated to his mother is titled “Umoni,” which features a heartfelt chorus.
Phoenix_047 expresses that the song “umoni” is a tribute to his mother, intended to honor her while she is still alive to appreciate it. He reflects on his upbringing in a religious environment but acknowledges that he has chosen a different life path. “I cannot shake the feeling that I have disappointed my mother with this choice, which leads me to see myself as umoni (sinner).”
So, who is Qonda Majavu, also known as Phoenix_047?
Qonda Majavu, a 24-year-old from Khwezi in Mthatha, earned his Honor’s degree in Bachelor of Science from Fort Hare University in 2021. He does not consider himself a full-time artist at present, as he is actively seeking employment to support his musical aspirations.
Like many local artists in the area, he finds the artistic landscape in Mthatha challenging, often questioning the value of his efforts. The limited opportunities and resources available to nurture the arts in the town make it difficult, with few paid performances and a high likelihood of exploitation.
One significant hurdle he encounters as an independent artist is the distribution of his music. “I typically rely on a paid distributor, such as DistroKid, and utilize platforms like Spotify. However, due to my current unemployment, I am unable to afford these services. Consequently, I also distribute my music through my YouTube, SoundCloud, and Audiomack accounts.”
Despite these challenges, the encouragement he receives from friends, family, and anyone who listens to his music inspires him to remain hopeful and committed to his craft.
