Fragments: By Rebone Thobela

Did someone say FRAGMENTS … huh?
Are you a fragmented being, Lethabo ‘The Lioness’ asked Makweya

Lethabo Makweya is a young South African woman from Kimberly. From her salient character, she always outstands among many. Those closest to her have always been straight from the shoulder and called a ‘world-beater.’

She attended an art school where she efflorescence into the woman she is and aspires to be.

Drama and Dance were one of her electives throughout her high school career. “I was always an overachiever and reverential. People detested me for that,” she says. Besides being ‘Head Girl,’ she gathered multiple awards for her Drama elective and other subjects.

Makweya is completing her Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama and Organizational Psychology at Rhodes University while having Performance Art Productions as her pastime.

The 4X National Arts Festival (NAF) writer, performer, and director recently wrote and co-directed a production titled Fragments.

The production became a success, being performed at the NAF. The fragment was a snippet of life with technology and social media, exploring the pieces of one’s identity being influenced by social media. It brings to question the meaning of value inscribed with likes and the amount of the following one has. The production won the Standing Ovation Award.

Art runs deep, Lethabo said.

Dying to be Human is the latest short film that Makweya directed. Her quoted words were, “There is nothing humane about humanity anymore.” The film tackles various viewpoints on the horrors of being human and finds the irony of how we are born human yet die trying to be.

Lethabo Makweya can be described as a jack of all trades, a master of none. She is a dancer, director, performer, and writer. Her family has always supported her creative nature and allowed her to pursue her dreams.

Lethabo plans to join her family business, Promethean Media as a director when she completes her degree. It’s not mistaken that she will undoubtedly succeed because of her hard work and talent, regardless of what her family can offer.
