Mara RSA; Makhanda’s own hip-hop star!

Thabiso Moneli, also known as MaraRSA, hails from Makhanda, previously referred to as Grahamstown. As a hip-hop artist, he draws inspiration from the various journeys and experiences of life. MaraRSA describes himself as a versatile musician who raps in multiple languages, conveying untold narratives.

He emphasizes that his motivation to create music stems from his hunger, desire, and passion, aiming to forge a brighter future not only for himself but also for his family.

Engaging with Mara RSA brought to mind a notable quote by Stella Adler: “Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one.”

In my assessment, it appears that an artist’s narratives originate from an intrinsic source.

However, I may be mistaken; Mara RSA contextualizes this notion by indicating that his background has significantly influenced his rap music. He pursues his passion and endeavors to create, despite the numerous obstacles he has encountered.

While narrating his journey, Mara RSA expresses that he does not perceive his artistic expression as burdensome, as he views it as a manifestation of love. It is something he is willing to defend, irrespective of the unpredictable challenges that may arise.

His artistic mission is to instill hope in those who feel despondent and to educate others through his work, with his EP ‘Joza News’ serving as a prime illustration of this commitment, released in December 2021.

He articulates that life encompasses both positive and negative experiences as we confront various challenges, and therein lies its beauty; this EP is a tribute to that aspect.

Perhaps our experiences cloud our perceptions, but they do not define our identities, as we are the architects of our own paths. At times, our faith is put to the test, particularly in this profession. Resilience is essential, as we all strive to narrate our own stories, he remarked.

Mara RSA firmly believes that his inspiration is profoundly rooted in his love for God, his mother, and the influence of Tupac. He also draws inspiration from the music of Bob Marley. Mara asserts that Bob Marley’s music conveys a prophetic and preaching quality, transcending mere entertainment.

Maganga (2016) noted that Bob Marley’s impact extended beyond creating music for enjoyment; he was recognized for utilizing his art to promote the Rastafari movement. According to Maganga, Rastafari emerged in the 1930s as a response to the teachings of Jamaican nationalist Marcus Garvey, who sought to instill self-awareness among people of African descent, ensuring that his legacy endures.

Let’s Talk Rap/hip hop music

He asserts that his rap style is a blend of trap elements, aimed at allowing listeners to deeply connect with the music on an emotional level.

His track, ‘Truck Load,’ available on all digital platforms, addresses the disparities between black and white individuals within the context of Makhanda, which reflects a broader reality in South Africa.

The song ‘Truck Load’ raises several poignant questions, such as: Why must black individuals endure hardship for financial gain, and why do we continue to experience poverty?

Mara RSA communicates directly with his audience, acknowledging that, like many, he too requires financial resources, as the current times demand economic stability—an undeniable truth shaped by systemic norms.

Moreover, Mara RSA explains that within the realm of hip hop, ‘Truck Load’ embodies the essence of West Coast (USA) music, articulating the challenges encountered in the townships of Makhanda, while incorporating elements of African trap.

Leveraging social media and digital streaming platforms, Mara RSA effectively utilizes modern technology to promote his music and engage with his audience.

Reflecting on the challenges he has encountered, Mara RSA notes that a lack of financial resources has been particularly daunting. He recognizes that for emerging artists, reaching an audience can be difficult, especially without management support in the music industry. Nevertheless, with his recent accomplishments and forthcoming projects, including a one-year contract with SKE Entertainment in California, Mara RSA envisions himself as an international artist within the next five years.

Undoubtedly, Mara RSA is diligently working and making significant strides that deserve recognition, as we often say, “Umasindwa ezama akanatyala.” Young individuals like Thabiso Moneli take pride in their identities and inspire hope in those around them who may have lost faith.

At such a young age, he is determined to seize opportunities and take control of his destiny.
