Who is Mpho Sebina?
Mpho Sebina, a singer-songwriter born in 1989 in the small village of Mochudi in Botswana, was raised in a family of music enthusiasts who exposed her to the sounds of artists such as Sade, UB40, Boom Shaka, Brenda Fassie, and Mariah Carey. These influences played a significant role in shaping her musical journey, both in terms of songwriting and singing.
Before embarking on a music career, Mpho Sebina pursued and completed an Honours Degree in International Business from the Multimedia University of Malaysia. It was during her time in Malaysia that she began to delve into the realms of writing, recording, and vocal training. Her debut single, “Loves Light,” was inspired by the song “Tselane” by the BLK JKS.
Her 6-track EP titled NEO can be found on iTunes, showcasing a blend of soul, R&B, African rhythms, and nostalgic elements. The lead single, “Black Butterfly,” is available on YouTube and explores themes of freedom and self-discovery through scenic outdoor shots and a graceful ballerina.
Throughout her musical career, Mpho Sebina has performed at corporate functions and music festivals, sharing the stage with renowned artists such as Shekinah, HHP, Freshly Ground, Nnunu Ramogotsi, Shanti Lo, Lady Smith Black Mambazo, and Louis Mhalanga. In 2016, she launched the Naked Soul Sessions, a live music event featuring various local artists. The event, which currently takes place in Botswana and South Africa, aims to expand its reach across the continent, (Music in Africa).
One of Sebina’s most remarkable songs is, “Too Late for Mama”. The Botswana singer-songwriter reimagines ‘Too Late for Mama, a tragedy and anthem by Brenda Fassie and Chicco about a woman affected by the lack of basic amenities in early ’90s South Africa.
‘It’s different and interesting. What I like about it is that the original was of that time and she made it to be of the present time. She has done a great job. The producers did a good job too”, Chicco. The Sowetan reported in 2021.
